Preparing Your Home For Winter

Preparing your home for the winter can be a difficult task but can save you a lot of time and money come springtime. Here is a short list of projects that you should complete this fall to prevent potential future claims.

Weather seal all windows and doors to prevent drafts.

Outside Maintenance - Complete by December 1st

  • Remove leaves from lawn and mow it short one last time.
  • Hire a professional who can flush out automated sprinkler system to prevent freezing.
  • Clear your roof of overhanging tree limbs to prevent roof damage.
  • Put reflective stakes outlining your driveway and property line to prevent plow damage.
  • Cut back all perennials and deadhead hydrangeas or other plants that will survive the frost.
  • Winterize outdoor shower.

Indoor Maintenance - Complete by December 1st

  • Weather seal all windows and doors to prevent drafts.
  • Turn off automated sprinkler system.
  • Close valves for outside hoses and showers to prevent freezing pipes.
  • Empty the gas from any gas-operated tool in your garage. You could also add a stabilizing agent to the fuel.
  • Gutters complete before conditions become icy

    • Gutters need to be cleaned at the start of every winter season to prevent damage to the gutter system or your house. Remember, cleaning gutters can be dangerous, so hire a professional if you do not have the proper equipment and training. Overflowing gutters can cause damage to your foundation and can ruin landscaping thats below the gutter.

Chimney complete before lighting your first fire for the year

    • Chimneys are prone to cracks and water damage. If left unattended these leaks can completely destroy your chimney or even cause flooding in your attic.
    • Hire a chimney sweep to remove glaze, creosote and soot to prevent a fire from accidentally starting.

Roof/Attic complete before conditions become icy

    • Check your roof for any missing shingles or holes in the trim.
    • Check the plywood in your attic for holes that may cause leaks/flooding.
    • Check for any holes or missing vents in your attic. Animals will try to make your attic their home for the cold winter months.
