Winter Insurance Checklist

The checklist below will help you review your insurance coverage, organize your winterizing tasks, and protect you against problems that may occur during the winter months.

1) Is your home adequately covered? If you have recently completed renovations to your home (for example, adding a sun porch or deck, remodeling a kitchen) or the homes in your neighborhood have increased in value over the past few years, your coverages may not be sufficient.

2) Do you have adequate liability insurance for your vacation rental property? As the owner, be sure you're sufficiently protected against renters' liability claims and potential lawsuits.

3) Did you purchase additional coverage when you bought your snowmobile and/or trailer? Make sure you have enough protection before crashing through the snow. If your snowmobile is over a certain size or horsepower, you may need a special policy.

4) Are you bringing valuable items (jewelry, computers, or that new set of skis) with you on vacation this winter? If the answer is yes, consider adding personal property endorsements, which extend your homeowners coverage while you're on the road.

5) Is your home or vacation property in an area prone to blizzards and other serious winter storms? Not all homeowners policies cover damage stemming from these natural disasters. If yours doesn't, additional insurance can be purchased to ensure that you're protected.

6) Taking that long-awaited international trip this winter? Consider purchasing a special travel insurance policy. It helps protect against trip cancellation and lost baggage costs, as well as unexpected medical expenses.

7) Do you have adequate liability insurance for your pet? Even the friendliest of animals can accidentally bite someone.

8) Do you have kids in college that will be renting an apartment during the winter months? Kids can be prone to accidents outside the home, so be sure your homeowners policy provides liability insurance off premises.

9) Renting a car? Check to see if your homeowners or renters policy covers items accidentally left in your rental car.
