Hurricane Safety Tips
July 2, 2009
Hurricane season is from June to November and there are a number of safety tips you should keep in mind before and during this time period.
Before hurricane season starts come up with a family disaster plan including:
- Creating a Disaster Supply Kit
- Having a place to go (including your pets)
- Securing your home
- Determining the safest area in your home
Safety Tip # 1: Disaster Supply Kit
Well in advance of hurricane season you should begin gathering and purchasing supplies including but not limited to:
- 3-5 day supply of water and non-perishable foods for each person in your family
- First aid kit including a 7 day supply of required prescription medications
- Cooking tools, hand can opener, paper plates, and plastic utensils
- Blankets and pillows
- Clothing, including sturdy shoes and rain gear
- Personal hygiene items including baby wipes
- Several flashlights and plenty of batteries
- Battery powered radio and plenty of batteries
- Extra fully charged cell phone battery
- Keep important document in a waterproof container (cash, Social Security card, checkbook, passports, insurance policies, and a list of important phone numbers and account numbers)
- Tools
- Pet food and pet care supplies
- Fire extinguisher
Safety Tip #2: Have a Place to Go
Before Hurricane Season discuss with family and friends where you will stay.
- During an evacuation do not delay your departure. Your family's safety is paramount. Do not try to "ride out" a dangerous storm.
- Know your local hurricane evacuation route. If in doubt, check with your local state police or Red Cross.
- If your plans include going to a hotel, make reservations before you leave.
- Know the location of hurricane shelters and how to get to them.
- Plan to take your pet with you. If necessary research kennels close to your destination ahead of time.
Safety Tip #3: Secure Your Home
- Secure the roof of your home to the frame using straps or clips.
- Install permanent storm shutters.
- Well in advance of hurricane season make sure you have thoroughly reviewed and understand your homeowners insurance policy.
- Secure outdoor gear including trash cans, patio furniture, and even storage sheds.
- Keep trees and shrubs that are near your home properly trimmed.
- Anchor fuel tanks.
- Know where your utility shut-off valves are.
Safety Tip #4: Have a Safe Area in Your Home
In advance of hurricane season, your family should establish the safest room in your home in case you are unable to leave.
- Choose an interior room that is well ventilated and has enough space for everyone.
- Keep your disaster supply kit in that room.
- During a storm, remain in your safe room until weather authorities have issued an "all clear" for your area.
- Stay inside and away from windows and doors.
- Make sure the electricity and gas are turned off.
