Hurricane Tips

Pay close attention to the latest weather reports and begin making necessary preparations, including:
- Create a Home Inventory: Have an up-to-date inventory of all of your personal property and keep copies in safe locations like a safety deposit box. Take pictures of your home and personal belongings and then email them to relatives living out of state. A home inventory will prove to be very helpful if you present a claim.
- Prepare an Evacuation Plan: Plan ahead and map out a safe and smooth evacuation route, and please follow any evacuation orders and be sure to stay tuned into all radio broadcasts and updates regarding weather events, and evacuation plans/routes. Have all prescriptions and important paper work, and insurance contact & policy information on hand in case you have to leave your home on short notice. It is also a good idea to have emergency supplies such as flashlights, a radio, batteries and water on hand. Additional clothing is also a good idea in case you are required to stay out of your home for an extended period of time
- Hurricane-Proof Your Home: Install storm shutters to protect your windows, or nail plywood panels to your window frames when a storm approaches. It is also a good idea to cover your sliding doors with plywood, and to replace old garage doors and tracks with a door that is approved for both wind pressure and impact protection. If wind comes into your home through a large opening, it increases your chances of major damage to the rest of your home, especially your roof.
- Safety: Be sure to only return to your home once the authorities declare it is safe to do so. Be careful of downed wires, sharp objects and other hazards that can arise form these situations. Discard any perishable food items that have been exposed to the elements, flood waters, or have not been refrigerated for more than 8 hours. It would be helpful to keep an inventory list of all discarded food if you plan to report a claim.
- What to do next: If you sustain damages, be sure to notify us immediately. Do not discard any damaged furniture or personal items as our adjuster will want to see them. If possible take photos before you begin the clean up. Retain any receipts for items that you purchase to protect your home from further damage like tarps and cleaning supplies. It is very important that you take all reasonable measures to protect your home from any additional damages that may occur due to the elements.
